Sports Facilities
Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi, firmly believes that sports and physical education are integral to the holistic development of students. As a dynamic and fast-growing institution under the University of Delhi, the College has established a notable and commendable presence in the national sporting landscape. Its students regularly participate not only in inter-college tournaments within the University but also in inter-university and all-India competitions, consistently demonstrating excellence, discipline, and sportsmanship on broader competitive platforms.
Admissions based on sports achievements are conducted strictly in accordance with the guidelines prescribed by the University of Delhi. Eligible candidates are evaluated through a centralized process that includes trials, certification, and merit-based criteria. The College strictly follows these procedures to ensure transparency, fairness, and equal opportunity for all deserving student-athletes.
The College offers a wide range of sporting disciplines that promote inclusive participation. These include athletics, basketball, table tennis, and volleyball, all offered for both men and women. Cricket and football, in line with current infrastructure and participation patterns, are presently offered only for male students. While these offerings reflect existing logistical capacities and demand, the College remains committed to upholding gender sensitivity and equity in all areas of its sporting culture, and ensures that available facilities for women are adequately supported and maintained.
Aligned with its broader vision for well-rounded education, the College fosters a strong culture of physical fitness, discipline, and teamwork through structured sports and wellness initiatives. Recognizing the importance of infrastructure in nurturing sporting talent, the College is presently undertaking significant upgrades to its on-campus sports facilities.
A multipurpose outdoor sports ground is under construction, which will provide a dedicated space for field games and athletics. In addition, a state-of-the-art multipurpose hall cum indoor sports complex is being developed. Once completed, this facility will support a variety of indoor sports and physical activities including badminton, basketball, table tennis, yoga, dance, and other wellness programmes. These developments reflect the College’s sustained commitment to providing students with access to modern, inclusive, and comprehensive sports infrastructure.
The College also actively encourages the participation of its teaching and non-teaching staff in sports and recreational activities. The Sports Committee regularly organises staff-centric events aimed at fostering well-being, camaraderie, and a spirit of community engagement. Among these, the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Faculty Tournament holds a prominent place, attracting enthusiastic participation from faculty members across various colleges of the University of Delhi. Although the tournament could not be held during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the most recent academic year due to ongoing construction, the College remains committed to reviving this important tradition in the near future.
Under the leadership of Mr. Balwinder Singh, In-Charge, Department of Physical Education, the College extends robust institutional support to both mainstream and emerging sports. Students are actively assisted in securing training venues, accessing equipment, and participating in competitions at the university, state, and national levels.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh College remains committed to fostering an environment where academic pursuits and athletic engagement are developed in tandem, supported by thoughtful planning, inclusive programming, and sustained infrastructural investment.
