National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The transformation of a nation hinges not solely on economic indicators like foreign exchange reserves and GDP, but profoundly on the character and capabilities of its citizens, especially in a youth-dominant country like India. Remembering that freedom is a hard-won birthright, demanding constant vigilance and defense, it becomes imperative for the nation’s youth to be prepared to serve the motherland when needed. This is where the National Cadet Corps (NCC) emerges as a pivotal force, dedicated to transforming young individuals into exemplary citizens, not necessarily solely as Armed Forces Officers.

Tracing its origins back to the “University Corps” in 1917, the NCC has undergone significant metamorphoses, culminating in its current form as the National Cadet Corps since November 1948. Renowned as the world’s largest disciplined and uniformed youth organization, it boasts a membership exceeding a million young men and women. As a tri-service organization, the NCC encompasses Army, Navy, and Air Force wings, recruiting cadets from diverse educational institutions, including those in remote areas of India. The core objective of its basic military training, which includes small arms and drill, is to cultivate crucial qualities such as character, courage, discipline, leadership, a secular outlook, an adventurous spirit, and selfless service to the motherland.

The NCC flag is a vibrant representation of its tri-service nature, with Red symbolizing the Indian Army, Navy Blue the Indian Navy, and Light Blue the Indian Air Force. The 17 petals on the flag signify the 17 Directorates of the NCC across India. The organization is steered by a Director General, an officer of a 3-star rank. The enduring motto of the NCC, ‘Unity and Discipline,’ encapsulates its commitment to fostering unity amidst diversity, while playing a crucial role in youth transformation, character development, and the inculcation of leadership qualities.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh College holds the distinction of being among the pioneering institutions in the University of Delhi to enroll under the NCC’s “Delhi Directorate.” Its specific unit, 1 Shaheed Bhagat Singh College Company, operates under the ‘4 Delhi Battalion’ in Group ‘C’ headquarters. This company zealously upholds the NCC’s motto by nurturing leadership, character, enthusiasm, comradeship, and sportsmanship, thereby cultivating a disciplined way of life and instilling patriotism and leadership in its students. The comprehensive NCC training imparts both physical and mental fortitude, while also fostering a strong sense of social service and an adventurous spirit among its cadets. Cadets from 1 SBSC Company have consistently demonstrated their exceptional potential, proudly participating in and excelling at various NCC camps and activities held at institutional, state, and national levels, thereby bringing laurels to the college.

The company’s distinguished journey began with the commissioning of Brigadier Neeraj Sharma into the Indian Army from Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, in 1991. Since this seminal achievement, 1 SBSC Company has consistently propelled forward, contributing numerous officers to both the Indian Armed Forces and Paramilitary forces. Shaheed Bhagat Singh College NCC has consistently showcased its prowess in a myriad of NCC competitions, including the Republic Day parade, Prime Minister rally, and Thal Sainik camp, proudly representing the college at state, national, and international platforms.
