About the Department
The Department of Political Science in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College was established along with its inception in 1967. The Department currently has full sanctioned strength of permanent faculty: two Associate Professors and eleven Assistant Professors. Additionally it also has two Guest Faculties. Each faculty of the Department comes with diverse and crucial research specializations in field of Comparative Politics, Political Theory, Political Thought, Indian Government and Politics, Development Processes, International Relations, Security studies, Public Policy and Administration and Foreign Policy.
Vision Of The Department
It reflects ethos that have been nurtured with great commitment and dedication by both faculty and students. The decades since its inception have seen the Department emerge as a nodal point of heterogeneous deconstruction and reconstruction of ideas and vibrant debates in the discipline.
Apart from familiarizing students with contemporary academic debates, the Department is emerging as a training ground for in-depth research and reference work. In this regard, the Department has developed crucial linkages with research institutions, organizations and public institutes in India, opening up interactive platforms for students to develop long-term research interests. The Department seeks to be a space for joint exploration in research and academic practices by students and the faculty.
The Department of Political Science seeks to develop critical thinking, activism, advocacy as well as leadership in the fields of Indian Government and Politics, Political Theory, International Studies, Public Policy and Public Administration. The Political Science graduates from the Department have established careers in higher academics, law, bureaucracy, international relations and media among many other fields.
The Department’s efforts are a reflection of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College’s commitment to nurturing and creating cosmopolitan citizens who espouse a democratic celebration of diversity. It is within this overarching ideal that the Department has been facilitating explorations in knowledge, continuously engaging with humanist concerns by creating a liberating pedagogy. Through the last five decades, the Department has continuously endeavored to contribute to critical and creative thinking, sustaining democratic spaces, broadening access and inclusivity in quality education and consistently working towards the empowerment of women and men. It has provided a context of learning that enhances professionalism, humanism and social responsibility.
Political Science Association
The Political Science Association (PSA) comprises of the President and the Executive Board (which has Class Representatives from the three years as well as the PSA executive board representative from each class). The PSA, under the guidance of staff advisor organises Eminent lecture Series round the year where renowned scholars, political analysts, media personalities, legal luminaries, political and social activists are invited. The PSA is also nodal in organising National and International Seminars/Conferences of the Department. Apart from these, the PSA also holds Mock Indian Parliament, Quiz, Debate, Theater and other inter-college competitions as a part of CHANAKYA- The Annual Political Science Festival.

- Special Lecture on Crisis in Nepal: Assessing the Road to the Future: The Department expanded its regional and comparative perspective by organizing a special lecture on 23rd September 2025, led by Prof. S.D. Muni, a distinguished scholar of South Asian affairs. Drawing on his extensive academic and diplomatic experience, he provided a nuanced analysis of Nepal’s evolving political landscape and key challenges in its democratic transition. The session highlighted regional implications and future prospects, offering valuable insights to students and faculty. It concluded with an engaging discussion, enriching participants’ understanding of contemporary South Asian politics.

2. Book Discussion on Adivasi or Vanvasi : The department of Political Science organized a Book Discussion on 26th September 2025, led by Dr. Kamal Nayan Choubey, who provided a nuanced and historically grounded exploration of identity, representation, and the politics of naming in Indian democracy. His insights encouraged students to critically examine questions of justice, recognition, and marginalization.

3. Represent Young Leader’s Forum CLAWS: The Department of Political Science represented Shaheed Bhagat Singh College at the Young Leaders’ Forum held on 31 October 2025 at the Manekshaw Centre on the occasion of National Unity Day, celebrating the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. The event featured distinguished speakers, including Shri Kiren Rijiju and General Upendra Dwivedi, who interacted with students on issues of national security and defense strategies. The forum highlighted the evolving nature of warfare, emphasizing the growing importance of cyberspace, information technology, and innovation. By connecting traditional defense approaches with modern technological capabilities, the session inspired students to recognize their role as future leaders in nation-building and security.

4. Workshop on Understanding Public Policy as a Career Option: The Department hosted a series of engagements to connect students with contemporary political realities. As part of this initiative, Mr. Amrit Mahapatra, Public Policy Consultant and LAMP Fellow, conducted a workshop on “Understanding Public Policy as a Career Option” on 14th November 2025. Drawing on his experience of working with Members of Parliament, he provided valuable insights into governance, policy research, and emerging career pathways in public policy, enriching students’ academic and professional perspectives.

5. Nukkad Natak on Civic Sense: On 19 November 2025, the Department of Political Science, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (SBSC), in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Delhi, commemorated Constitution Week through a series of academic and cultural activities promoting civic awareness and constitutional literacy. As part of the celebrations, SBSC students performed a Nukkad Natak on the theme “Civic Sense,” addressing issues such as road safety, air pollution, and gender justice, while highlighting their constitutional relevance. As the inaugural event at the Faculty of Social Sciences, the performance drew a large audience and was widely appreciated for its impactful message.

6. Inter-College Policy Making Competition : On 20 November 2025, the Department of Political Science, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, organized “Policy Verse,” an inter-college policy-making competition. Participants engaged with themes such as “Ecofeminism and the Gendered Impact of Disasters” and “Fiscal Responsibility: A Constitutional Duty for a Secure and Fair Future,” presenting well-researched and innovative policy proposals. With over 20 teams participating, the event fostered critical thinking and policy analysis. As part of Constitution Week (19–20 November 2025), the initiative blended policy discussions with creative expression, bringing constitutional ideals to life and highlighting democratic values through vibrant student participation across Delhi University.

7. Political Science Association (PSA) Picnic: On 22 November 2025, the Political Science Association of department organized a refreshing picnic at Lodhi Garden Delhi, providing students and faculty with a welcome break from academic routines. The afternoon was marked by engaging conversations and shared moments, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Beyond leisure, the gathering encouraged discussions on future activities and collective growth. The outing strengthened bonds within the department, leaving participants rejuvenated and more connected.

8. Launched & Orientation of YPC SBSC: The Department of Political Science officially launched The YLAC Policy Collective of SBSC on January 19, 2026, with a dynamic orientation led by founders Piyush, Sameeksha, and Aman. Bridging the gap between theory and governance, the event featured a high-stakes Policy Quiz on EU Foreign and Security Policy, sponsored by the Jean Monnet Module. From the interactive “Propose Your Policy” session to the felicitation of our esteemed faculty. This landmark event set the stage for a new era of student-led policy discourse, research, and collective learning at College.

9. Interview Podcast Session: An engaging podcast session with Mr. Harsh Vardhan Pant was held on 27 January 2026, organized by the Magazine Committee of the Department. He shared insightful perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region, India–US relations, and India’s evolving strategic role in global politics. The session offered students a deeper understanding of contemporary international affairs and encouraged critical thinking about India’s foreign policy priorities in a changing global order. Participants actively engaged in discussion and shared thoughtful questions after the talk.

10. Book Discussion on Paashchatya Rajnitik Darshan : The Department of Political Science organized a book discussion, written by Dr. Smita Aggarwal and Dr. Nishant Kumar, on 29 January 2026. The session provided a comprehensive exploration of Western political philosophy, tracing its development from Plato to Rousseau. Speakers emphasized the continuing relevance of classical political thought in understanding modern governance and institutions. The discussion encouraged students to critically engage with philosophical ideas and connect them with contemporary political issues. It also fostered analytical thinking and academic curiosity among participants. Overall, the event successfully bridged classical theory with present-day political realities and enriched students’ intellectual understanding.

11. Interview a podcast session with Mr. Anil Trigunayat : The Magazine Committee of the Department hosted an insightful session with Mr. Anil Trigunayat, on 4th February 2026. The discussion focused on the evolving dynamics of West Asia, India’s extended neighborhood, and key strategic policy choices shaping regional diplomacy in 2026. Mr. Trigunayat provided insightful perspectives on geopolitical shifts, energy security, and India’s diplomatic engagement with the region. The session enriched students’ understanding of contemporary international relations and encouraged critical analysis of India’s foreign policy priorities in a rapidly changing global order.

12. Podcast Session on Budget 2026, Corporate India, and inclusive growth: An insightful podcast featuring Ms. Mitali Nikore was held on 10th February 2026. The session emphasizing the interconnection between public finance and corporate strategy. Ms. Nikore shared valuable perspectives on fiscal policy priorities, economic reforms, and their impact on business and society. The discussion highlighted pathways toward equitable and sustainable growth. It enriched students’ understanding of contemporary economic issues and encouraged analytical thinking on national development.

13. Session on What is Public Policy and Career Opportunities in the Field: A speaker session was held on 13th February 2026 by the YPC SBSC of Department. Led by Mr. Siddharth Kapoor, the session introduced students to the interdisciplinary nature and practical relevance of public policy in addressing real-world challenges. He discussed diverse career pathways and required skill sets in the field. The interactive session concluded with an engaging Q&A, making it highly informative and insightful for students.

14. Interview on Green Power Politics: A thought-provoking session with Mr. Neeraj Singh Manhas was held on 15th February 2026. He analyzed contemporary political developments with special emphasis on green power politics, highlighting the growing significance of sustainability in global governance. The speaker discussed emerging geopolitical shifts, energy transitions, and environmental diplomacy. The session encouraged critical reflection among students and broadened their understanding of evolving political priorities. It concluded with an interactive discussion, making it engaging and intellectually enriching for participants.

15. CHANAKYA’ 26 – The Annual Cultural Fest: The Department of Political Science recently witnessed its most ambitious annual cultural fest “Chanakya’26” held on 21st of February 2026. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across various universities, making it a grand celebration of intellect, debate, and cultural vibrancy. The inaugural session of Chanakya’26, focused on “Migration in Europe: Concepts, Theories and Methodology.” The session was chaired by Prof. Rekha Saxena, Head of the Department of Political Science, University of Delhi, and delivered by Dr. Sheetal Sharma, Associate Professor at the Centre for European Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. It offered students valuable insights into migration studies and its contemporary global relevance. The fest was anchored by three flagship segments: Chanakya Youth Summit’26: The Diplomatic Arena, Faultiness: The Ultimate Policy Crisis & Talent Hunt: The Cultural Spotlight.

15 (A). Chanakya Youth Summit’26: The Diplomatic Arena: The summit served as a high-octane platform for debate and diplomacy. Featuring two intense committees—the All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM) and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW)—the event challenged students to step into the shoes of global leaders. It was a remarkable display of oratory skills, consensus-building, and geopolitical strategy.

15 (B). Faultiness: The Ultimate Policy Crisis: The YPC SBSC Chapter under the aegis of the Political Science Association, Conducted Faultiness was a unique policy-making competition. Participants were pushed to their limits with “Crisis Shocks,” requiring them to draft resilient policies under extreme pressure. It tested not just their knowledge of governance, but their ability to remain calm amidst simulated chaos.
15 (C). Talent Hunt: The Cultural Spotlight: Transitioning from the cerebral to the creative, the Talent Hunt celebrated the diverse artistic spirit of our students. From soul-stirring poetry and melodic singing to high-energy dance performances, the stage came alive with talent, proving that our department is as vibrant in art as it is in academics. Chanakya’26 was more than just a fest; it was a testament to the collective synergy of the Department of Political Science. By blending rigorous intellectual discourse with cultural celebration, we didn’t just host an event—we fostered a legacy of leadership.

16. Podcast Session on The Deconstruction Consortium: On 25th February 2026, The YPC SBSC of Department successfully launched its newest initiative with an expert session on India–China relations led by Dr. Rityusha Mani Tiwary. The discussion provided a multidimensional analysis of middle-power strategies and the preservation of strategic autonomy within an emerging neo-bipolar world order. Key dialogues focused on managing bilateral tensions in multilateral forums like BRICS and navigating the intensifying U.S.–China rivalry. By evaluating complex geopolitical and economic narratives, the session equipped participants with a nuanced understanding of the diplomatic dilemmas shaping contemporary global power shifts.

17. Podcast Session on India–Japan relations: On 26th February 2026, a podcast session featuring Ms. Srabani Roy Choudhury was conducted. The discussion focused on India–Japan relations, recent political developments in Japan, and the prospects of future strategic collaboration between the two nations. Ms. Roy Choudhury highlighted the growing convergence in economic, technological, and security domains, along with shared regional interests. The session provided valuable insights into contemporary Asian geopolitics and enriched students’ understanding of bilateral diplomacy and evolving international partnerships.

Virtual Lecture on Judicial Review in India: On 1st March 2026, The YPC SBSC of Department hosted an incisive virtual lecture by Dr. Adityanjee, tracing the judiciary’s evolution from its constitutional foundations to contemporary challenges. The session navigated landmark jurisprudence, such as the Kesavananda Bharati case, to illustrate the critical role of the Basic Structure Doctrine in safeguarding democratic morality. Dr. Adityanjee provided a rigorous analysis of the collegium system and the ongoing institutional tensions between the executive and judicial branches. By addressing systemic vulnerabilities and the necessity of structural reforms, the event offered participants a profound understanding of the judiciary’s role as the guardian of fundamental rights.

Virtual Lecture on Life in 4th Year at DU: On 4th April 2026, The YPC SBSC of Department hosted a practical session by Mr. Himanshu from Ramjas College, who provided a balanced perspective on the benefits and challenges of the additional year. Grounding the discussion in personal experience, the speaker highlighted the critical importance of selecting a supportive academic advisor to navigate the complexities of the dissertation process. Students gained realistic insights into productivity and discipline through candid examples of common pitfalls and best practices for managing an increased academic workload. By moving beyond theory, the session served as an essential guide for those aligning the fourth-year option with their long-term research and career aspirations.

Virtual Lecture on Policy Playbook: On 23rd March 2026, The Politics and Governance vertical of The YPC SBSC of Department launched with a dynamic session on entering public policy, featuring Ms. Pia Chopra from Deshbandhu College. Drawing from her experience with NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, she provided a practical roadmap focus on rural governance and international relations. The session offered structured guidance on securing high-impact internships, emphasizing proactive networking over traditional applications. Participants gained invaluable insights into building professional LinkedIn profiles and mastering cold emailing, equipping them with the essential tools to pursue successful careers in the policy sector.

21. Interview Podcast Session:The Political Science Association organized a podcast on 20 April 2026 on the theme “Swadeshi, Geopolitics & India’s Foreign Policy,” featuring renowned economist Prof. Ashwani Mahajan, National Co-Convenor of Swadeshi Jagran Manch, as the keynote speaker. The session provided a thought-provoking exploration of economic self-reliance in the context of a rapidly evolving global order. Prof. Mahajan underscored the need to strengthen indigenous industries while effectively navigating complex geopolitical challenges. He also emphasized the importance of aligning India’s foreign policy with national interests and long-term developmental priorities, making the discussion insightful and highly relevant for students.

- Panel Discussion on China in the World Order: Implications for Indian Security: The Department of Political Science, SBSC panel discussion on 20th September 2024, featuring Major Namrata Dhasmana (Retd.), a geopolitical analyst, moderated by Dr. Rityusha Mani Tiwary. Major Dhasmana provided key insights into China’s global role, India’s security strategies, and Indo-Pacific concerns.
- Special Lecture on Gandhi’s Concept of Satyagraha: Relevance in Today’s Times: An enlightening seminar on the relevance of Satyagraha was held on 1 October, 2024, led by Prof. Manoranjan Mohanty. He elucidated how non-violent resistance continues to shape justice and democracy. Drawing on the philosophies of Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, he encouraged participants to explore seminal texts like Hind Swaraj and My Experiments with Truth.
- Workshop on The Gender Lens: Approaches And Praxis: With the vision of creating a more inclusive and equitable society, the Departments of Political Science and Economics organized a transformative workshop October 7, 2024. Keynote speaker Dr. Nupur Ray engaged participants in thought-provoking discussions on gender roles, societal expectations, and inclusivity.
- Interview Session with AIR 462 – Rituraj Sarma: The Magazine Committee of the Department hosted an insightful session with Mr. Rituraj Sarma, AIR 462 in UPSC CSE 2023 on October 8th, 2024 through online mode. A 2022 graduate of the college, he cleared UPSC in his first attempt. He emphasized determination, strategic planning, self-discipline, early answer writing, current affairs, and CSAT practice.
- Interview Session on Civil Services Preparation and Life as an IPS Officer: The Magazine Committee of the Department organized an insightful online session on 25th October 2024 with IPS Aashna Chaudhary. Ms. Chaudhary elaborated on key strategies, including selecting the right optional subjects, and maintaining a structured study schedule. Additionally, she provided insights into the responsibilities of an IPS officer, discussing leadership, integrity, and decision-making.
- Interview Session on Preparation Strategy and Life as an IAS Officer: The Magazine Committee of the Department organized an online interview session with IAS officer Mr. Anubhav Singh (AIR 34 in CSE 2022) on October 27, 2024. He shared challenges of balancing UPSC preparation with teaching at Lucknow University, highlighting resilience and continuous improvement.
- Interview Session on The Current Trajectory of India’s Foreign Policy: The Magazine Committee of the Department organized an online interview to understand India’s foreign policy on 28th October 2024. The meeting featured the distinguished Mr. Shiv Shankar Menon, former Foreign Secretary and National Security Advisor, who shared his profound expertise on India’s evolving diplomatic landscape. It was an enriching experience that inspired students and scholars alike, fostering a deeper understanding of India’s role in shaping international affairs.
- Book Review & Guest Lecture: The Book Discussion Committee of the Department organized an event on 8th November 2024, featuring a review of the book Hobbes Against Friendship by Prof. Gabriella Slomp, shedding light on Thomas Hobbes’ views regarding human relationships and political structures. Following this, a lecture on “Hobbes and the Modern Political Community” was delivered by Prof. Ashok Acharya, Department of Political Science, University of Delhi, and a visiting professor at Yale University.
- Session on Writing Research Articles: Tracing The Steps: The Department organized an online workshop on November 12, 2024, featuring Dr. Rupak Kumar, Assistant Professor at VIT Vellore. The session aimed to guide students through academic writing and publication, starting with identifying research gaps and formulating significant research questions. The interactive workshop addressed common challenges, including overcoming writer’s block, using citation tools, and improving manuscript quality.
- Workshop on Masters and Ph.D. Applications Abroad: The Department, in collaboration with Project EduAccess, organized a live workshop on 16th November 2024, featuring the distinguished Khushi Anupriya Dudi, Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters in Global Development Policy, Europe and Pooja Singh, PhD in Political Science, Boston University, USA. The speakers shared their personal experiences, highlighting challenges and strategies for securing admissions to top international universities.
- Session on Indian Judiciary and Impending Reforms, with Special Evaluation of DY Chandrachud’s Term: The Department organized an online session on 23rd November 2024 featuring Saurav Das, a renowned investigative journalist. Key issues such as judicial transparency, pendency of cases, access to justice, and the need for technology-driven reforms to enhance efficiency in the legal system were addressed.
- Roundtable Discussion on “गांधी: बहुसमयत और सतत्सांवद“: The Gandhi Study Circle, in collaboration with the Department organized on 1st February an event that hosted a delegation from Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad, engaging in a thought-provoking discussion on the relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy in contemporary times.
- Workshop on Policy Research: The Department, in collaboration with the Career Counselling and Guidance Cell, organized a workshop on 3rd February 2025. Mr. Ritwik Mehta, political strategist and founder of NitiTantra, was the keynote speaker. The event explored policy research, its role in governance, and data-driven decision-making.
- Faculty-led Session on The Role of Blockchain in Financial Services: The Department, in collaboration with Mahindra University, organized a session on February 13, 2025, led by Prof. Sanjay Mansabdar, Professor of Practice at Mahindra University, who provided an in-depth analysis of blockchain technology and its growing significance in the financial sector. He discussed its potential to enhance transparency, security, and efficiency in transactions.
- Chanakya – The Annual Cultural Fest: The Department successfully organized its annual fest on 1st March 2025. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across various universities, making it a grand celebration of intellect, debate, and cultural vibrancy. The day was graced by Prof. Bijayalaxmi Nanda, who delivered an insightful address on Women at the helm of India’s growth story in 2047 contemporary political discourse. The highlight was the official launch of the department’s Annual Magazine – “चक्रviewह”, a compilation of thought-provoking articles, research, and student contributions. The fest featured शास्त्रार्थ, a riveting semi-parliamentary debate, along with Policraft, a policy-making challenge that tested analytical acumen. The day concluded with Shaam Shandaar, a mesmerizing cultural evening filled with music, dance, and artistic expressions. With an overwhelming response, CHANAKYA 2025 proved to be a dynamic platform for intellectual exchange and creative expression.
- Political Science Association organised its first event, a lecture as a part of its “Distinguished Lecture Series Edition” on 01/11/2023. The lecture had the theme of “Systemic Causes of The Problems Facing China’s Economy in the New Era”, delivered by Dr. Pradeep Taneja, a Senior Lecturer in Asian Politics.
- Political Science Association of the Department of Political Science in collaboration with the Jean Monnet Module, Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University organised its second event, a quiz competition followed by a live streaming of a Panel Discussion on the topic “Europe in India’s Security Calculus” on 23/11/2023. The session included reputed personalities like Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, former President of the European Parliament, Prof. Klaus Welle, former Secretary General of the European Parliament, Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri, former Indian Ambassador to the European Union, and Prof. Harsh Pant.
- The Department of Political Science, in association with Gandhi Study Circle (SBSC) organised special lecture by Ujjawal Singh on Gandhi “Indian Constitutionalism: Gandhian Experiments” on 28.11.2023.
- The Department of Political Science, with 3 faculty members and 74 students, participated in the International Lecture Series: organised by Jean Monnet Module, Centre for European Studies, JNU, on 20.02.2024 where Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri, Klaus Welle, Dr. Sheetal Sharma, Prof. Ummu Salma Bava and others spoke about the upcoming elections in the European Union, Mother of all Parliaments and shed light on the workings of democracy in large territories like India and the EU.
