School of Happiness

School of Happiness

Introduction

In a modern world defined by increasing academic rigour, social anxieties, and more complex global situations, the School of Happiness is designed as an initiative by Shaheed Bhagat Singh College to address the emotional, psychological and social aspects of student and staff well-being. It aims to go beyond traditional support for academic matters to help enable inner contentment, meaningful engagement and a more balanced life.

At the heart of the initiative is the spirit of Shaheed Bhagat Singh – who believed in being present in the moment with intention, possibly even a revolutionary intention, and in being engaged in meaningful work, social well-being, and societal change. The School of Happiness promotes a caring and resilient campus community, contributing to the nurturing engagement and well-being of students and staff through holistic development. It fosters students’ overall growth, enabling them to flourish in the fast-paced world of today not only academically but also emotionally and morally.

To establish a vibrant, welcoming campus culture that encourages multidisciplinary cooperation, psychological wellness, and holistic well-being in order to equip students to be compassionate, capable, and future-ready citizens.

  • To include life skills and emotional wellness into educational settings.
  • To create safe and thoughtful, inclusive spaces for students and faculty to reflect, learn and connect.
  • To implement values-based education, counselling, and organised events to foster a culture of happiness, gratitude, and self-awareness.
  • To breakdown disciplinary barriers so that students may collaborate to address real-world problems and understand and appreciate viewpoints from various fields.
  1. Promote Mental and Emotional Well-being
Organise regular sessions on mindfulness, meditation, and stress management to help students and faculty cope with academic and personal challenges.
  2. Cultivate Positive Values and Mindsets
Introduce gratitude practices, happiness journals, and reflection activities to foster emotional intelligence, resilience, and empathy.
  3. Provide Counselling and Support Systems
Offer professional and peer-based counselling services for emotional, social, and academic concerns in a confidential and approachable setting.
  4. Develop Life Skills and Self-Awareness
Conduct training sessions in emotional regulation, communication, goal-setting, and decision-making as part of a broader well-being curriculum.
  5. Bridge the Gap Between Disciplines and Students
Facilitate dialogue and interaction across departments to encourage interdisciplinary thinking and inclusive peer learning.
  6. Celebrate Diversity and Promote Inclusion
Create events and platforms that embrace differences in backgrounds, beliefs, and interests—enhancing a sense of belonging for every student.
  7. Inspire Purposeful Education
Help students align their academic pursuits with personal meaning, ethical responsibility, and social contribution.

At a time when knowledge is consolidated, and innovation is about collaboration; the School of Happiness works to break down the silos existing between students from different disciplines in the college. Students of commerce, arts, and interdisciplinary programs are often engaged in their own departmental circles, which limit their interactions with diverse ideas, experiences, and approaches to problems.

To counter this, the School of Happiness:

  • Provides platforms to cross departments for engagement to meet a community of diverse peers.
  • Undertakes engagement events or campaigns that involve students from myriad disciplines
  • Creates joint service-learning opportunities where students from different disciplines come together to work on a theme
  • Implements peer mentorship programs pairing students from two departments together that promote inter-personal skills and open up academic perspectives.
  • Provides co-curricular programs with a theme about life and well-being to develop shared learning environments outside of the subject matter specialization and textbooks.

The School of Happiness is not simply a wellness centre — it is a movement designed to rethink how we define success in academic institutions. It envisions an environment where students are not only high achieving, but also emotionally balanced, socially interactive, and ethically mindful. By promoting happiness, inclusion, and collaboration between different fields of study, the school reflects the inspiring values of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and supports the progressive vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
